Owens Corning and GAF are the two leading manufacturers in
the roofing industry and commonly known for their (dimensional)
architectural shingles available in 30, 40 and 50-year warranties.
Owens Corning and GAF also make a slightly more economical
25-year three-tab shingle. Though closer in price with other
brands such as Tamko, IKO and Elk, Trim-Pro found Owens Corning
or GAF to be the popular choice.
Installations
Although installing new shingles over one layer of existing
shingles is permitted, the proper and recommended method is
removal of the existing shingles. Once removed, the wood can
be inspected and any rotted or bad sections can be repaired.
All areas which require flashings are also exposed and new
flashing can be installed where needed. “Ice and water
shield” is then applied (along the bottom roof edge,
in roof valley(s), around vent pipes, chimney areas, skylights,
etc.). New vent flanges and felt paper are then installed.
Now the roof is ready for actual shingle application. Shingle
roofing replacement on the average takes one day and is backed
with a ten-year labor guarantee (as well as the manufacturers
material warranty).
Flat Roofs
A popular method for flat roofing replacement is torch down
rubber roofing. A base sheet is first applied. Then rolls
of rubber are burned over lapping one another producing a
flat rubber roof surface.
Roof Ventilation Systems
One of the latest and best methods for roof ventilation is
called a ridge vent. A slot is cut out along the peak of a
roof. A rolled vent is then installed and roof caps nailed
on top. Ridge vents are very efficient and unlike power vents
or turbines are not very noticeable.
